Occurrence of Yersinia enterocolitica in wild-living birds and Japanese serows.

Yersinia spp. were isolated from 34 of 500 birds representing nine species. The highest isolation rate, 5 of 21 (23.8%), was found in blue magpies (Cyanopia cyanus), followed by pheasants (Phasianus colchicus tohkaidi), 5 of 33 (15.2%); gray starlings (Sturnus cineraceus), 6 of 57 (10.5%); tree sparrows (Passer montanus), 1 of 14 (7.1%); bulbuls (Hypsipetes amaurotis), 4 of 57 (7.0%); crows (Co...

Mycoplasma ovis detected in free-living Japanese serows, Capricornis crispus.

Nineteen blood samples collected from free-ranging wild Japanese serows, Capricornis crispus, between 2006 and 2008 in Iwate prefecture were examined for the hemoplasma infection by real-time PCR targeting the 16S rRNA gene. Five (26.3%) out of the 19 samples were positive in real-time PCR with an average melting temperature at 85.18 °C. The positive samples in the real-time PCR were reconfirme...

Infection with Possible Novel Parapoxvirus in Horse, Finland, 2013

A horse in Finland exhibited generalized granulomatous inflammation and severe proliferative dermatitis. After euthanization, we detected poxvirus DNA from a skin lesion sample. The virus sequence grouped with parapoxviruses, closely resembling a novel poxvirus detected in humans in the United States after horse contact. Our findings indicate horses may be a reservoir for zoonotic parapoxvirus.

Predicting Japanese scrambling in the wild

Japanese speakers have a choice between canonical SOV and scrambled OSV word order to express the same meaning. Although previous experiments examine the influence of one or two factors for scrambling in a controlled setting, it is not yet known what kinds of multiple effects contribute to scrambling. This study uses naturally distributed data to test the multiple effects on scrambling simultan...

Influenza A virus infection in Japanese wild boars (Sus scrofa leucomystax)

Serum samples were collected from 385 wild boars between 2010 and 2013 to examine the seroprevalence of influenza A virus (IAV) in Japan. Antibodies against IAV were identified using a commercial kit in 13 wild boars (3.4%). To identify the serotypes, positive sera were examined by virus-neutralization test using representative serotypes and strains. Three wild boars in Yamaguchi and four in To...
